Danni Bangert, Potter

Grand Lake Art Gallery

Although I have been primarily a functional potter, the "Dancing" rock art forms left on southwestern canyon walls by early Native Americans have always fascinated me. They often seem so "celebratory" having long "begged me" to transform them into clay. In recent years I have been experimenting with a process called "salt sagger firing". (Formed pieces are placed in a closed clay container along with straw and salt and then fired.) This technique gives pieces a look of antiquity. This process and my long time interest in petroglyphs are a natural combination giving birth to a new series of work called "Dancing Shamans". The pieces shown are my interpretations of one of the rock art forms of the southwest....a happy representation of things ancient but still revered.
